C'est l'un des créateurs, avec Ronald Fisher et Sewall Wright, de la théorie synthétique de l'évolution, ou néodarwinisme. Il a écrit : A Mathematical Theory of Natural and Artificial Selection (1924-1928), The Causes of Evolution (1933), The Biochemistry of Genetics (1954).
